Course Map

The course is an out-and-back loop in a park setting featuring two water stations along the route. After finishing the 5k, participants will be directed to the food and beverage tables before reuniting with their team, coaches, and family in the Team Gathering Area.

Preparing for the 5k

What to Wear: Coaches, girls, and running buddies MUST wear their Girls on the Run t-shirts (running buddies will get theirs on race day). Girls and buddies must also pin their bibs to the front of their shirts. All attendees should dress for the weather; we are a rain or shine event!

Expect a Crowd: This will be a BIG event! Expect more than 2,500 people to be at the 5k. Here’s a breakdown:

  • # of Participants and Running Buddies: 1,700
  • # of Girls on the Run Families: 850
  • # of Coaches: 200
  • # of Event Crew Volunteers: 140

Weather: Be prepared for any weather! There are no covered areas, so dress accordingly!

What to Bring: There will NOT be a bag check. If you’re running, only bring what you can manage. If you’re a spectator, bring signs, noisemakers, and prepare to cheer! Girls on the Run will not be providing seating, please plan accordingly. No chairs are allowed in the Team Gathering Area.

What to Eat: Girls and running buddies should eat about two hours before the run starts (10:00am) and choose fuel that's high in energy and easily digestible.

Running Etiquette

Given the number of teams, things may get a little crowded. To help ease congestion along the route, we ask that participants follow a few guidelines:

  • If you are walking (or skipping, hopping, dancing!) along the course, please move to the right, so that faster runners have space to pass on the left.
  • Please do not run/walk more than two people across so you don’t take up the entire width of the path.
  • For safety purposes, please stay on the sidewalks and paths and DO NOT run on the road.
  • There are a few points along the course where you may be stopped by a Course Marshal to allow a car to safely cross. To ensure your safety, please follow all directions from course officials.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long will the 5k run take?

Finishing times vary of course, but our fastest runners will complete the run in about 25 minutes. Most runners will finish between 30-45 minutes. We will begin sweeping the course around 11:30am to ensure all runners have returned to the starting area.

Can I purchase Girls on the Run apparel and gear at the event?

Yes! Limited Girls on the Run merchandise will be available to purchase. Cash (exact change is appreciated) and credit cards will be accepted. Items range from $5-$65 and include t-shirts, hoodies, hats, and accessories for both adults and girls. Visit the GOTR Shop in the Expo area to view items and make a purchase.

Will there be a photographer?

Yes! There will be a photographer and pictures will be posted after the event. Using the password "GOTR", you'll be able to see the photos here: http://andiepetkus.zenfolio.com/p550344346

How can I support Girls on the Run at the event?

Purchase your 50/50 raffle tickets to support Girls on the Run while securing your chances to win half of our raffle jackpot! One ticket for $5 or five tickets for $20! The proceeds from the raffle will go towards providing scholarships and helping to keep the program accessible to all girls in Portland. The winner will be announced at the Girls on the Run 5K!

Where can I cheer for my girl?

While we understand that caregivers/family/friends would love to see the girls at the start and finish line, this area can get very congested causing safety concerns. Please take advantage of our "Race Viewing Areas" as these are great areas to view the 5K and help to keep the start/finish lines clear. Refer to the map above to locate the "Race Viewing Areas". *Please note: some of these cheer areas may take ~10 minutes to walk to from the Team Gathering area.*

DO I HAVE TO KNOW A GOTR PARTICIPANT TO REGISTER FOR THE 5K?

No, everyone is welcome to join us! We offer two categories of registration for the 5k - Running Buddies and Community Runners.

WHAT ACTIVITIES ARE HAPPENING BEFORE THE START OF THE 5K?

There are many great pre-race activities and there is some serious excitement in the air! We will have a photo booth (Sponsored by Kate and Steve’s Camp), temporary hair color spray, and a dance warm up with Diva Den!

Where should I park?

If arriving at 9am, there will be traffic congestion. Over 2,000 spectators and participants will attend the Girls on the Run 5k. For this reason, give yourself extra time to find parking and to walk to the event gathering area. Free parking will be available in the Portland International Raceway lots.

Directions to Portland International Raceway

The Girls on the Run of Portland 5k will be held at the Portland International Raceway. The Portland International Raceway is located just south of the Columbia River and ~ten minutes (driving) from downtown and the Portland International Airport.

Directions by Car

Take Exit 306B on I-5. The event space is just west of the freeway. There is scheduled construction and closures on I-5 which will delay traffic to and from the event. Review your route before driving to the 5k. We encourage participants to take the MAX to avoid congestion.

Directions by MAX *Preferred Option*:

Ride the Yellow Line toward the Expo Center and get off at the Delta Park/Vanport MAX station. Taking the MAX will be the best way to travel. While there is planned construction on the Red and Blue Lines that may impact the Yellow Line, we believe these delays will be more manageable than potential delays on I-5. As an incentive for riding the MAX, all participants and attendees who show a valid Saturday MAX ticket will be entered into a raffle to win an Adidas gift bag. *A valid Trimet ticket is required to ride the MAX and GOTR Portland Metro will not cover this cost.

Are there aid stations available?

Water stations will be available on the course for 5k participants.

Can I bring my dog or pet?

For safety, all furry friends are not allowed on the course or at the event, so please leave all pets at home on 5K day! All pets will be asked to return to the pet owner's vehicle if spotted at the event.

WHAT SHOULD I WEAR?

Coaches, GOTR girls, and running buddies MUST wear their Girls on the Run t-shirts (running buddies will get theirs on race day). Girls, buddies, and community runners must also pin their bibs to the front of their shirts. All attendees should dress for the weather; we are a rain or shine event!

MY GIRL IS A GOTR PARTICIPANT-- DO I NEED TO REGISTER HER FOR THE 5K?

All current GOTR participants are AUTOMATICALLY registered for the 5K.

This event would not be possible without the help of amazing volunteers who believe in our mission and show up to support our girls. Over 100 volunteers are needed to put on our best 5K yet! Whatever your special skills and talents, we have a role for everyone.

*5k Crew Volunteers must complete an online background check to participate at the Girls on the Run 5k. Instructions on how to complete the background check will be included in your 5k Crew registration confirmation email.*
