Share a girl’s exhilaration and excitement as she crosses the finish line of her celebratory 5K. For many girls, this is the biggest challenge and greatest accomplishment of their Girls on the Run or Heart & Sole experience. One of their favorite parts is having their very own Running Buddy by their side!

Running Buddy Overview

The goal of our programs is for the girls to do their best and HAVE FUN! Girls are not encouraged to race competitively, but are encouraged to reach their own goals. For most girls, that’s making it to the finish line- whether it is by walking, running or skipping!

This is ideal for those who would like to coach, but do not have the time to commit to coaching an entire season. Your job is to complete the 5K at her pace and provide support, encouragement, and FUN throughout the 3.1 miles.

Running Buddy registration will open for our Spring Girls on the Run program after March 1st.

Sign up here to be notified when Running Buddy registration opens.

Running Buddy FAQ

DO I HAVE TO BE A RUNNER TO VOLUNTEER AS A RUNNING BUDDY?

No. Our girls will walk, run, and walk/run during the 5k. We will ask you for an estimated pace when you register  so we can pair you with a girl who will be as evenly matched to you as possible.

CAN I CHOOSE THE GIRL THAT I RUN/WALK WITH?

Running Buddies may indicate a preference for a specific girl or a specific program site when the application is filled out. If you have a preference, please apply early. Once a team has filled, we will not be able to accept Running Buddies at that site.

WHAT IS MY ROLE DURING THE 5K? WHAT WILL I TALK WITH MY GIRL ABOUT?

Your role is to encourage and motivate your girl to cross the finish line. Most girls will not be working to reach a specific goal time or pace. Some will talk your ear off during the 5k and others will be  more reserved. It can be helpful to be prepared with questions to ask her: What have you been learning about in Girls on the Run? What is your favorite part of the program? What do you plan to do during the summer break? What is your superpower?
