Share a girl’s exhilaration and excitement as she crosses the finish line of her celebratory 5K. For many girls, this is the biggest challenge and greatest accomplishment of their Girls on the Run or Heart & Sole experience. One of their favorite parts is having their very own Running Buddy by their side!

Running Buddy Overview

We are no longer registering Running Buddies for spring 2017. If you would like to join us in spring 2018, click here to be notified when registration opens

The Girls on the Run 5k is the culminating event of the Girls on the Run spring season--it's a celebration of the importance of taking care of our emotional and physical health. It's a moment that beautifully reflects the very essence of the program and truly embodies our mission of inspiring girls (and women!) to be joyful, healthy, and confident. This spring, 850 3rd-5th grade girls will celebrate the completion of their Girls on the Run season by running 3.1 miles together, and we are so excited for you to be a part of it!

As a Running Buddy, you will act as a chaperone and mentor to a girl during the Girls on the Run 5k. This means matching HER pace, cheering her on, and recognizing and respecting her limits. The goal is for each girl to do her best and to have fun! Girls are not encouraged to race competitively--running is not about "winning" or beating one another, it's about the girls reaching their OWN goals. For most, that means making it to the finish line-whether it's by power walking, running, or skipping!

Running Buddy FAQ

WHY ARE RUNNING BUDDIES ADULT WOMEN?

Here in Portland, we've been inspired by seeing our girls matched with strong women and by watching them cross the finish line together. In addition to surrounding GOTR girls with positive female role models, we're motivated to show them that women (of all shapes and sizes) are athletes. We're passionate about encouraging women and girls to become active and to celebrating their health and wellness. Inviting them to have a special relationship at the 5k is one of the ways that we do this.

WHAT'S THE TIME COMMITMENT OF BEING A RUNNING BUDDY?

Being a Running Buddy is a one-time commitment--running buddies run/walk ONCE with their girl buddy at the Girls on the Run 5k. If you are interested in further engagement opportunities with the program participants, consider becoming a Girls on the Run coach.

DO I HAVE TO BE A RUNNER TO SIGN UP AS A RUNNING BUDDY?

Buddies do not have to be runners, but they do need to be able to complete a 5K and match the pace of their girl buddy.

CAN I CHOOSE THE GIRL THAT I RUN/WALK WITH?

Running Buddies may indicate a preference for a specific girl or a specific program site when the application is filled out. If you have a preference, sign up as soon as registration opens on Monday, April 3rd.

WHO ARE RUNNING BUDDIES?

Running Buddies are usually members of a girl’s immediate community such as family members, teachers, or family friends. For girls that need help finding a buddy--Girls on the Run offers assistance. We recruit women (such as friends of our coaches and the organization who are background checked) to fill-in to ensure that every GOTR girl has a (fabulous) running buddy.

WHAT IS MY ROLE DURING THE 5K? WHAT WILL I TALK WITH MY GIRL ABOUT?

Your role is to encourage and motivate your girl to cross the finish line. Most girls will not be working to reach a specific goal time or pace. Some will talk your ear off during the 5k and others will be more reserved. It can be helpful to be prepared with questions to ask her: What have you been learning about in Girls on the Run? What is your favorite part of the program? What do you plan to do during the summer break? What is your superpower?
